Purple Net Project

SCROLL DOWN

Purple Net Project

Across Canada, there are hundreds of hoops without nets, and hundreds of kids without positive role models. Big Brothers Big Sisters and #SwishinMission are hanging purple basketball nets on hoops across the city, to bring Big and Little Brothers and Sisters together through basketball.

You can join the project and make a meaningful difference in a kid's life by volunteering to become a Big Brother or Big Sister.

Who can volunteer as a Big Brother?

A Big Brother is a caring, responsible guy who is over the age of 18. Our Big Brothers come from diverse backgrounds and from all walks of life. No special skills or experience are needed. All you need is a little time and enthusiasm.

What is the basic commitment of a Big Brother?

Spend 2 – 4 hours once a week with your Little Brother and commit for a minimum of one year. Don’t worry, you can still go on vacation! After a year, you can arrange to see your Little Brother once a month, or continue with weekly outings.

Will I be paired with a child who lives in my own community?

We try to match a Big Brother to a Little Brother who lives close by. Little Brothers are between the ages of 7 and 14. We match Volunteers with boys who have similar interests and personalities. Sometimes the most compatible Little Brother will live in a neighbouring community and a small amount of travel may be necessary.

Big Buddy

Who can volunteer as Big Buddy?

A Big Buddy is a caring responsible person who is over the age of 18. Our Volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and from all walks of life. No special skills or experience are needed. All you need is a little time and enthusiasm.

What is the basic time commitment of a Big Buddy?

One hour per week, during school hours, on school-grounds, for a minimum of one year. Big and Little Buddies do not meet over summer vacation or other school holidays.

What do the children like to do?

Weekly visits take place at the child’s school, so you may have access to the school’s facilities. Big and Little Buddy friendships are non-academic, so you won’t be tutoring them. It’s all about FUN! You and your Little Buddy may choose to play outside, shoot hoops, or kick a soccer ball around. Or you can stay inside and read, do arts and crafts, bake cookies, or just hang out and talk. We make every effort to match Big and LittleBuddies based on similar interests and personalities.
